How’s the New Year Going?

So, we’re half-way through January already. Eek — I have so much work that needs to get done. On the one hand, I’ll be happy when the cold weather eases up, and on the other, I need time to stop while I knock my to-do list down to size!

The Year in Money is going ok so far. Market weirdness combined with my plane ticket purchase means my net worth isn’t looking so hot, but honestly, market weirdness is a good thing for me — cheap(er) stock-buying now means better growth later. So I don’t really mind, although of course I prefer seeing high net worth numbers when I open Mint 🙂

I’m basically pretty pleased with my spending, though. Grocery shopping’s going well, and my only non-rent/food/travel spending so far has been: a co-pay and prescription; a gift for my mom’s birthday in early February; a charity donation; a reimbursable conference registration (though I’ll probably have to wait a while for the reimbursement itself); and a leakproof microwave-safe bowl to take homemade soup to work in. (That’s an affiliate link and a strong recommendation [even if you don’t want to use the affiliate link, of course!] for Sistema containers; they come in a variety of sizes, and I haven’t found anything as leakproof as they are — you can have one full of soup, turn it completely upside down, let it rattle around in your bag, and all the liquid stays firmly behind the seal. They’re BPA-free, too.)

I kind of feel on cruise control — this is a boring post because nothing out of the ordinary’s going on with my money, and boring is just the way I like my finances. So far so good, January! Let’s keep it up!

How’s your 2015 going?

I’m guessing boring is a pretty bad thing for a pf blogger, but when it comes to your personal finances, boring is beautiful! Glad to see you are having a good start to the year.

    Have a great weekend!

Right? I’m like “I need to have something dramatic happen with my money! Right now! So I can blog about it!” but actually boring is the best thing, so I’m trying to enjoy it. Have a good weekend yourself!

I’m feeling pretty restless so far this year. I’m having a love/hate relationship with the downtime. And yes to the net worth being down! I know long-term it’s a good thing, but I still hate it!

Yeah, my 403(b) contribution should go through today so I know it’s good for me…but it SUCKS to see the view on mint 🙂 I hear you about the restlessness — I want to make a big dramatic splash somehow but what I really need to do is just focus on keeping the train moving.

  3. Hey an uneventful week is not a bad thing! What kind of conference are you going to?

I’m an academic — I’m giving a presentation on my research. Lucky for me, fully paid for by my job 🙂

  4. Boring is good. January is going ok for us. I think there will be some interesting stuff going on with our banking soon, so that’s something for me to look forward to. I keep getting letters about how our bank is getting new policies that seem pretty rough in March.

I have to keep reminding myself that boring is good — I get twitchy when there’s nothing really going on!

  5. Net worth is moving up and to the right. That’s not so boring!

I’d like to get to boring. Work is getting a little too exciting these days.

    1. thesingledollar says:

Oh, yes, I guess I could focus on my work instead of my money 🙂 I’ve been neglecting it a little bit lately. Good luck getting yours to settle down!

  6. Boring is helping me get through January without spending too much, too. So far, just one extraneous purchase, made at 3am before I remembered that I’m trying to not spending anything this month!

      Go Team Boring!

Pretty nice so far. Daughter was ill for few days (which is clearly not nice and she’s too young for us to bee too ‘relaxed’), but other than that we’re OK. Husband’s business is doing well, I also secured few web design contracts already, so hope we’ll gonna do well.

    1. thesingledollar says:

Aside from the illness, that’s a great start to the year! Cheers. 🙂

  8. Market fluctuations have been killing me! My met worth has taken a pretty big hit.

The new year gives bloggers like you and I an opportunity to reset and get excited about making money new ways again.
